India and Science

Recently the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) conducted a survey to measure "India's progress in science".
Some(Many??) "interesting" observations from this survey -
1. 6% of indians believe that Earth is flat
2. 10% believe human beings were created by Brahma
3. 18% believe Earthquakes are caused by the shaking of the mythological snake!!

Wait there's more.
The same report also explains how science is in a state of disarray -
Some of the important observations
- India doesn’t have enough good science teachers and science students
- 63 per cent of unemployed post-graduates are science students.
- regional imbalances in facilities make education expensive and inequitable, available only to those who can afford it
But, despite low levels of literacy, Indians don’t fare too badly against Americans in their attitudes to science
Cool!!

Happy Ganesha Habba!!

Wishing you all a Happy Ganesha habba !!!

The legend behind Ganesha Chaturthi's Moon -
There is a popular legend that warns against sighting the moon on the night of Ganesh chathurti. Why?? Chk this out...
Once Ganesha had come to earth on chaturthi and had a heavy meal of 'kadabus'(Modakas) offered by his devotees. So, his stomach had bulged to a very 'unhealthy' size. He was returning back home on his vehicle - the 'mouse'. Suddenly, the mouse tripped on seeing a snake. Ganesha fell off the mouse and his over-full stomach burst open and out tumbled the modakas.
Seeing this comic scene, the moon, which was shining bright by the way, burst out laughing!! Ganesha grew seriously angry, took the snake and tied it around his waist. Then, cursed the moon that he a'int gonna shine any more and that no one should look at the moon on the Ganesh Chaturthi day. If anybody does, he will surely earn a bad name or be falsely accused.
Only after a mistake do we repent, the same happened with the moon. He pleaded with ganesha about how 'stupid' he was and all that. Ganesha being kind-hearted relented but said Moon would no longer shine in full glory every night. He would wax and wane from a bright fortnight to a dark fortnight ending with the Full Moon and the New Moon alternately and anybody who does a mistake of seeing it on a Ganesha chaturthi can negate the effect of the curse by listening to the story of syamantaka jewel,or by reciting this sloka given below.

siMhaH prasenamavadhee siMho jAmbavatA hataH |
sukumAraka mA rodIH tava hyeshha syamantakaH ||

Translation - A lion killed Prasena; the lion was killed by Jambavan. Don't cry, O dear child! This syamantaka jewel is yours.

So, people be careful abt seeing the the moon today and "Ganesha habbada shubashayagalu", may Ganesha give you all siddhi, success in undertakings, and buddhi, intelligence.

Title tale...

Aaah, Lazy Sunday Morning, nothing much to do other than watch TV. Surfing thru channels, I got to see Mr. and Mrs. Smith promos on Gemini TV (Telugu Channel). The Movie was dubbed into Telugu. So, the movie title was in Telugu too. Could you guess what the name of the move is/was?? It’s called “Chalaki rani kiladi raja”. Is this cool or what ;-)???

I can remember some of such movies, which were dubbed into regional languages like Eraser, which became ‘Mitadoonga naam-o-nishaan’ in Hindi. Fatal attraction got better, It was called “Khooni Aakarshan”. Its awesome how people actually think of these titles.

Wonder what would happen if Bollywood movies were dubbed into English, it would be just perfect, for a disaster that is. But, we would be treated with some hilarious titles like these…

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai - Something or Other is Happening
Kaho Na Pyaar Hai - Say That There is Love
Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani - Still the Heart Remains Indian
Na Tum Jaano Na Hum - Neither Do You Know, Neither Do I
Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge - Choose from - The Brave Heart Shall Take the Bride or The Bold Shall Win the Bride.
Kabhi Kushi Kabhi ghum - Soggy Hindu family Mess
Also, heard somewhere that Deewaar has been distributed overseas under the title I’ll Die For Mama!

Shivaji - The 'Thalaivar' is all set to rock you!!

This is the ‘Hottest’ News in the Tamil film industry, probably the whole of India too and parts of Japan mebbe!! Rajnikanth, the superstar of Tamil cinema has teamed up with Shankar for his next movie ‘Shivaji’ to be produced by AVM. This is supposedly the biggest ever film made in South India. Shankar has started work on the script of the film, which will be released next year.

Check this out…
"Shivaji" will be the AVM's ninth film in which Rajnikanth will be acting. Incidentally it will also be Shankar's ninth directorial venture - a fact Rajni considers as significant as the superstar's lucky number is also said to be 'nine'. Rajini is reported to have told Shankar that 'Nine" would prove lucky for both of them.

Why was the film titled "Shivaji"? Thespian Sivaji Ganesan made his debut in ‘‘Parasakthi’’, which was produced by AVM. So, AVM's 68th film has been named as "Shivaji" in honor of his memory.

Interestingly, the real name of Rajni is Shivaji Rao. Also, it is rumored that Rajini is being paid around 25crores for this movie!! My god, is that money or what?? The screenplay, storyline, lead actress has not been finalized yet. Another ‘news’ states that this film will be released by Nov 2006. So wait and watch people!!

P.s : Thalaivar means Leader

We can win!!

It’s been a good day for Indian sports fraternity yesterday. Hmm, Long time since I heard anything like that!! Here’s why…

Hyderabad tennis Chick Sania Mirza makes it to the fourth round of US open. She is the first Indian to enter the fourth round of the US Open. Awesome. She beat 43rd-ranked Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli 7-6, 6-4 in straight sets. Although, she meets world #2 Maria Sherapova in the next round and almost no hopes of winning against her, its kind of feels nice to see an Indian reach this heights. Great going Sania!!

Check this link - Sania Mirza on the prowl at the Flushing Meadows

Also, Indian Boys Paes and Bhupathi won their own battles in the same competition.
Paes and veteran American Martina Navratilova brushed aside the challenge from unseeded French pair of Tatiana Golovin and Fabrice Santoro 7-6 (7-1), 7-6 (10-8) to move into the second round. Bhupathi and Daniel Hantuchova defeated Chinese Tian Tian Sun and her Swedish partner Simon Aspelin 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (11-9)

Link: Paes, Bhupathi winNext, In Cricket, India win against NZ in Videocon Tri series. India beat NZ by 6 wickets with Mohd. Kaif leading the way with his unbeaten century and also shewag’s swashbuckling 45 off 34 balls helped India win comfortably. Good to know that India are on a winning path after a long time. Hope this is first of many wins.

Finally, India wins a gold in little discussed 16th Asian Athletic Championships. Soma Biswas won India’s first gold medal at the 16th Asian Athletic Championships, triumphing in the heptathlon event on the second day of the competitions on Friday. Also, India won only one other medal on the day, a bronze through Krishna Poonia in the women’s discus.

Nice!!

So, It would be a dream come true for 1billion people if Sania wins US open Championships, India clinch the Cricket world cup and Athletes bagging gold in Olympics!!! A dream indeed!!
